Mark Batterson
Lead Pastor

Mark was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and grew up in Naperville, Illinois.
Mark went to the University of Chicago on scholarship playing basketball and majoring in pre-law. After a prayer walk through a cow pasture, he felt called to full time ministry and ended up at Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri. That's the short story. Mark also holds a Doctor of Ministry from Regent University. He is the author of a dozen books including his first published title, In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day and The Circle Maker, a New York Times Bestseller.
Mark and his wife, Lora, moved to Washington, DC, in 1994 to direct an inner-city ministry. He has served as Lead Pastor of National Community Church since 1996. Under his leadership, NCC has grown from a core group of 19 people to one church with multiple locations.
Mark and Lora live on Capitol Hill and have three children: Parker, Summer, and Josiah.

Devyn Grijalva
Dream Fellow

Hello, I'm Devyn Grijalva, a 21-year-old Christian hailing from the beautiful landscapes of Guatemala. Though I was born in Silver Spring, MD, my formative years were spent in Jessup, MD, where I cultivated a deep appreciation for faith, community, and, the beauty of God's creation.
My journey took an inspiring turn when I graduated from the Freestate Challenge Academy, a military school in Aberdeen, MD. This experience instilled in me discipline, determination, and, a sense of duty that I now carry into my ministry work. Ministry is my passion, and I've discovered a particular calling to work with the youth. It's incredible to witness the transformative power of faith and mentorship in young lives. My aim is to inspire, guide, and support them on their unique spiritual journeys.
Beyond ministry, I find solace and inspiration in nature. Hiking and leisurely walks in the great outdoors are my soul's medicine. While I'm out exploring, you can often find me with a cup of coffee in hand. Music is another profound love of mine. Whether I'm singing praises in church or enjoying melodies that stir the soul, music plays a vital role in my life. In addition to English, I speak Spanish, which allows me to connect with a broader range of people and cultures.

Rod Durham
Informational Technology Director
Rod descends from a line of engineers, carpenters, farmers, and blacksmiths and leads the Information Technology efforts at NCC where he oversees activities and resources that involve electricity and computer chips. His hometown is either Carson, CA or Springfield, VA depending on his preference but he has family roots in DC’s Ward 7. Rod is an MIT-trained engineer and has worked in positions at NeXT computer, the Naval Research Laboratory, and as a teacher at Cornerstone Community School among other consulting roles throughout the IT, defense, and intelligence industries. Rod enjoys working with driven teams to accomplish a mission. Rod has been married to his wife Taz since 2019 and they have two children, Gabrielle and Cory. As Rod feels aligned with NCC’s convictions, manifesto, and beliefs, he believes he's at home in his role at National Community Church.
Caroline Lebakken
Graphic Designer

Caroline grew up in a lot of places—most notably, North Carolina, Colorado, and southwestern Germany. She moved to the DMV in 2021 after completing her undergraduate and a MA in Visual Communication Design with Liberty. A lifelong artist-type, Caroline is especially interested in the space where creativity and theology overlap. She studies these connections in Fuller Seminary's Master of Divinity program, and plans to graduate in Spring 2024.
Caroline supports NCC Creative Studios in stewarding the visual brand and communication of the church through graphic design. When she's not designing or studying, she enjoys exploring the city, conversing over coffee, making candles, or spending a quiet evening at home with her fiancé and cats.
